December 16, 2008
What a surprise! Katie and Jeff got an offer on their house that they had taken off the market and after counteroffers back and forth, it sold. The closing is December 29th so they are moving in here until they can make arrangements to close on the house they want. The kids are so excited they can't wait. Katie, however, has an enormous amount of packing to do before then.

Our topic for today is Tales of Christmas Past. Besides 2 quotes from Charles Dickens, I wrote:
Our first grandchild, Jackson, was born in January, 2001. Christmas came alive again that year as his eyes lit up with each new sight and sound. What a difference!
Then in 2002 we were blessed with 4 more grandchildren and the excitement mounted.
Skip to 2008. We now have 9 grandchildren and the house fills with the laughter and merriment that only children bring.
Lesson learned: The joy and wonder of Christmas seen through the eyes of a child is magical.

Our topic for today is Christmas trees. I wrote:
Oh Christmas tree of 1969, you were returned to us from Viet Nam when the address to Carl was incomplete.
Oh Christmas trees of the 70's, you had colored lights, tinsel, and candy canes.
Oh Christmas tree of 2008, I thought we'd never get you up. Today you are finally decorated after purchasing a new tree stand. You joined our family in 2004 as our first pre-lit artificial tree. You have shades of red, gold, and copper ornaments and a new tree skirt!

Lists
I'm all about lists: grocery lists, lists of things to do, a list of meds, and especially Christmas lists. In 2001 I began a Christmas journal to highlight gifts each year, the births of grandchildren, and the Christmas dinner menu. With 9 grandchildren I have to start shopping early. This year I began in August and except for one little extra for Anna Kate and James (who I save to last), I am finished!
What's new?
1. Christmas displays early because of the economy.
2. Internet shopping. Love it!
3. Gift cards for 3 on my list.

Christmas cards
My journal entry for 12/3: Dear Friends and Family, As you know I haven't sent Christmas cards in many years. While I was teaching, I found it difficult to get them out on time. Many of you have been faithful in continuing to send us cards without any reciprocation on my part. This is my 6th year of retirement, I've had 2 back surgeries and I have run out of excuses. DD taught a class on Christmas card making recently and I feel motivated to make a FEW cards to send out this year. If you are among the in town friends and family, you will probably not receive one this year. Hey, it's a start!
May the peace and joy of Christmas be yours this year.
Love,
Barbara
